Q: What is the difference between “American Venetian Plaster” and “Italian Venetian Plaster”?
A: Today “American Venetian Plaster” can be purchased at almost any large discount home improvement store, faux finish vendor or paint store. Everyone is offering their own version of Venetian Plaster.
- The difference lies in the quality of the ingredients and the percentage of lime and marble flour.
- Many of the American Venetian Plasters have high levels of resin (acrylic) and contain very little lime or marble flour.
- Many are gypsum based and less durable.
- Most of the American Venetian Plasters need a final coat of wax to seal the finish and keep it from rubbing off.
“True Italian Venetian Plaster” is different. We import our plasters from Safra Italian Plasters in Verona, Italy.
- Historically correct formulas are used to create their plasters. The marble and lime used in our plasters are mined from the same quarries once used by Michelangelo.
- They offer the finest 100% pure slaked lime and marble plasters available in the world.
- Restoration approved - In Italy they are very specific regarding which plasters can be used to restore their historical buildings.
- Safra is the plaster the Italians ask for by name.
- Many of there structures have lasted for hundreds of years. Safra plasters are durable and maintenance free.
- The finish feels like stone and does not require wax.
- Over 70 Italian paint manufacturers buy their Venetian Plasters from Safra under their own name. Seven are among Italy’s top ten paint manufacturers.

- Safra Plasters respect in the Architectural and Designer field in Europe is unparalleled.
- They are 100% organic; resist mold, mildew, dust mites and the elements.
- These plasters have a variety of extremely durable finishes that range from smooth and polished to rough and textured.
- The lime based plasters are derived from hydraulic lime; this allows substrates to breath, which makes them completely non-toxic and hypoallergenic.
- Some of the plasters look like granite or marble. The beauty and depth of the shine is almost translucent.
